The Macedonian Defence Minister, Zoran Jolevski, participates today on a joint meeting of Ministers of Defence and Interior of countries from the Central European Defence Cooperation and the Salzburg Forum, which is being held in Vienna, Austria.

On the meeting devoted to the joint management of migration challenges, Minister Jolevski said that the Republic of Macedonia gave major contribution in the closing of the Balkan refugee route and suggested that the state institutions in Macedonia reacted appropriately, effectively and in a coordinated way.

In that context he stressed the solidarity aid that Macedonia received from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Serbia, countries that deployed their own police officers on the northern and southern borders in support of the Macedonian Police.

In his address Jolevski referred to the next steps that need to be taken in order to maintain the security and stability in the region and beyond. “We anticipate that all measures taken by the European Union, NATO – Alliance and countries in this format, will produce good results. In this context, from the European Union we expect intensive engagement and leadership”. The minister added that the EU – Turkey agreement must be respected, that there is a need to improve the coordination and exchange of information and data between countries of the so-called “Balkan route”, and also that there is a need to accelerate the integration processes of the countries from the region in the EU and NATO.

“The challenges of the current migrant crisis tell us that meetings of this format should become a regular practice, with the expectation of them to give new impetus in the strengthening of the cooperation”, the minister said in front of the Ministers of Defence and Interior of 14 countries from Europe, including the Minister of Interior of the Republic of Macedonia, Agim Nuhiu.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Jolevski also held a bilateral meeting with the Austrian Minister of Defence, Hans Peter Doskozil.
