The interministerial group for monitoring the process of preparing strategic defence documents in the Government of the Republic of Macedonia was introduced to the experiences of Great Britain on policies for creating strategies and strategic documents for defence and security

The interministerial group for monitoring the process of preparing strategic defence documents, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and Minister of Defence, Radmila Shekerinska, and comprised of Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and Minister of Interior, Oliver Spasovski, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikola Dimitrov, Finance Minister Dragan Tevdovski and Justice Minister Bilen Saljii, met today with Steven Glover, Senior Advisor on Defence and Security in the Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom.

Britain’s defence policy expert, Steven Glover, along with the US defence issues expert, Bruce Bach, in the presence of UK Deputy Ambassador Paul Edwards, and the defence attaché in the British Embassy, Richard Parry, presented the organizational structure of the British system for defence and security, as well as the processes and procedures that arise from the creation of strategic defence documents for a national strategy on defence and security. These strategic documents, in defence policies and practices of the United Kingdom, are used by the UK government as lists for checking the achievement of strategic goals and missions in the area of defence and security of the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and Minister of Defence, Radmila Shekerinska, who chairs the Interministerial Group for Monitoring the Process of Preparation of Strategic Defence Documents in the Government of the Republic of Macedonia, expressed gratitude for the opportunity of the members of this interministerial group to get acquainted with the experiences of Great Britain in this field. The Defence Minister stressed that Great Britain, as a proven friend of the Republic of Macedonia and honest supporter of the country for its membership in NATO, gives serious contribution to our country in the period when a move towards the long-awaited membership of the Republic of Macedonia in the Alliance is expected.

Some of the suggestions that arise from the presentation of the UK experiences in the preparations for elaborating strategic defence documents are already being applied in the Republic of Macedonia. This primarily refers to the integrated, inter-ministerial approach, in the analysis and preparations for creating strategic defence documents that already give more substantial results in comparison with the segmented approach thus far, Minister Shekerinska said.

Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov stressed the new energy in the Government and the competent ministries for the Euro-Atlantic processes, which introduces creative dynamics in the preparation of strategic defence documents, while Finance Minister Dragan Tevdovski emphasized that the defence budget for the next year is dimensioned according to the standards of the NATO member states, as an important factor in the creation of strategic defence documents, which gives the possibility of monitoring the implementation of defence strategies.
