At the meeting, the possibilities for cooperation in the area of defence and the fight against terrorism were analyzed. The possibility of increased participation of the Republic of Macedonia in EU-led peacekeeping operations, as a contribution of the Republic of Macedonia towards European security, became a topic.
The interlocutors exchanged views on the political developments in the Republic of Macedonia and the government’s reform steps in the context of the Euro-integration process, in the domain of media freedom, the rule of law, public administration reforms, the security sector, the intensification of the good neighbourly relations and the fight against terrorism.
- “EU and NATO integration are a strategic interest in which Macedonia has a broad consensus, but it is necessary to show progress on the EU and NATO agenda in order to strengthen the support even further. You can count on Macedonia as a trusted partner”, Shekerinska said.
- “The reforms that are on the agenda of the new government are necessary and we welcome them. Establishing stability and a developed democracy is important not only for the stability of the country, but for the whole region as well”, Serrano said.
Deputy Secretary General of the EU Diplomatic Service, Pedro Serrano, announced a visit to Macedonia as part of a wider tour across the Western Balkan countries, when the aspects of defence cooperation and the fight against terrorism will be discussed in more detail.
